Summer School

We run a number of programmes at our International Summer School. Here is a brief overview of what we have to offer:

Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) Programme

Full-time Intensive (3 weeks) July – August

Part-time September – June

The course is for all teachers (or aspiring teachers) of English anywhere in the world, whatever your teaching background or experience. The course will enhance your classroom teaching, raise your language awareness and increase your confidence in a classroom situation.

The TKT programme focuses on the core teaching knowledge needed by English teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners, anywhere in the world. It involves:

  • Language and background to language learning and teaching
  • Planning lessons and use of resources for language teaching
  • Teachers’ and learners’ language in the classroom
  • Classroom management
  • Students’ performance in each module is assessed via a series of 3 tests.

It is strongly advised that non-native speakers wishing to take this course should have at least an intermediate level of English – e.g. an IELTS band score of 5.

Young Learner Summer School Programmes

All programmes include:

  • Full-board residential accommodation
  • Transportation between all sites and on excursions
  • Free group leaders (depending on group size)
  • Social programme activities afternoons and evenings
  • Day excursions to Edinburgh, Durham, Newcastle and Sunderland City Centre
  • Visit the Sunderland International Air show (subject to date)
  • Meet the Mayor (subject to availability)
  • Access to computers for internet and email
  • Course attendance certificate

English Language Programme

  • Maximum class size of 15 students
  • English lessons with qualified and experienced teachers
  • Interactive and engaging activities and tasks

Additional London Programme option

Includes 1 week in London:

  • Day visits to Cambridge and Oxford
  • Historical sights: Westminster and Houses of Parliament, Downing Street, Big Ben, Trafalga Square, Buckingham Palace, British Museum
  • Shopping: Covent Garden, Oxford St
  • River cruise on river Thames and Greenwich experience

Recreational Programme

Includes outdoor recreational activities and camp experience:

  • Climbing and abseiling
  • Archery
  • Grass sledges
  • Off-road buggies
  • Woodland craft workshops
  • Sports Programme (Cricket, football, hockey and more)
  • Sport specific coaching by highly trained individuals
  • State of the art facilities and equipment
